A statement from the City of Cocoa regarding current events

What happened to George Floyd should never have happened. We stand with those who demand justice and real change, and we condemn the actions of those involved in this tragic death. We understand there is outrage, anger, and frustration over these injustices. We stand united with our community to peacefully enact change but we do not condone rioting, looting, and violent protests we see around the country. We support the rights of people to demonstrate and make their voices heard and we will continue to protect this way of life.

We have worked hard over the years to build trust through community policing efforts and remain dedicated to working with our residents, united. An overwhelming majority of the men and women who accept the oath to protect and serve, do so with great responsibility. It is an oath they take very seriously. Together, our city has made great strides forward in our efforts to be fair and accountable to those we are sworn to serve and protect. We are all dedicated to serve our community in all capacities with the highest level of professionalism and integrity. Let’s continue to move forward by working together to find real solutions to the crisis’ we face, both now, and in the future.

We will stand with the peaceful voices who march in our communities. We will march alongside you. We stand with every citizen who expects civility, decency, compassion and respect and justice.

Your safety and security has been and always will be our highest and most sacred priority.
