Brevard Schools Foundation Gives Away Free Supplies

Posted on February 8, 2017 at 11:19 AM by Samantha Senger

District 4 Councilwoman, Jeri Blanco had the opportunity to attend a recent event, Shop from the Heart, hosted by the Brevard Schools Foundation which distributed more than $14,000 worth of school supplies, over $16,000 worth of brand-new clothing, and more than $33,000 worth of hygiene products to homeless children in Brevard Public Schools.  The event was held on November 17th, in conjunction with National Hunger and Homlessness Awareness week at the Supply Zone located at the Clearlake Education Center in Cocoa.  Teacher representatives were invited from every public school in the district to collect the free supplies; they gave these supplies to the homeless students at their schools.

Nearly 2,000 identified homeless children were enrolled in Brevard Public Schools last year.  Two hundred of those students were “unaccompanied youth” – they had no parent or guardian taking care of them.  Many of these children are lacking basic items including warm clothing, hygiene products, and school supplies.  The Supply Zone hosts Shop from the Heart every year in order to ensure that these children have the tools they need to learn and succeed in school.

In addition to receiving free supplies, teacher attendees also had the opportunity to ask questions, exchange ideas, and meet with representatives from local support organizations including Students at Risk, Brevard Health Alliance, Crosswinds Youth Services, and the Department of Children and Families.

Shop from the Heart is made possible by the generosity of local businesses, organizations, and members of the community.  Their financial and in-kind donations enabled the Supply Zone to give away all supplies for free.  The Supply Zone serves teachers and students all year long, though, so donations are always needed.

Shop from the Heart partners included: Kids in Need Foundation, Brevard's Children in Need, Dr. Ravi and Ambika Palaniyandi, Colgate, and Viera Lions Club.

The Supply Zone for Teachers, a service of the Brevard Schools Foundation, is an educational resource center that distributes free school supplies to teachers and students at schools with high poverty levels.  In order to serve the educational and creative needs of children in Brevard Public Schools, the Supply Zone collects donated supplies from sponsoring companies, organizations and individuals, as well as accepts monetary donations to purchase supplies at a fraction of the retail prices.  The Supply Zone then makes these supplies available to the teachers at no cost.  The facility is centrally located at Clearlake Education Center in Cocoa, Florida and is open throughout the school year.
