Summer Fun in Cocoa

Posted on May 12, 2020 at 3:54 PM by Lauri Thompson

Inspired by the recent Florida Today post about summer recommendations (http://www.floridatoday.com/story/news/local/2015/06/12/see-florida-todays-summer-recommendations/71132678/), I thought it would be fun to list the top 10 things to do this summer in Cocoa.  There are so many options, it is hard to choose just 10.  But here you go...

(1)  Visit one of the many community centers throughout the city.  Brevard       County Parks and Recreation has a great summer camp lineup and always has great events going on throughout the county.

(2)  Visit the Eastern Florida State College Planetarium and Observatory.  They have a lot of great events and programs for kids.  Check out the schedule of activities at

(3) Brevard Museum of History and Natural Science is a great place to learn all about history and ecology in our area and the importance of conserving our natural resources.

(4) Play in the fountains at Riverfront Park.  The fountains run daily from 10am-6pm.  It's a great place to come cool off this summer and let the kids enjoy some time outside.  Call Cocoa Leisure Services at (321) 639-3500 x4 to find out if the fountains are functioning and are not turned off for a special event before you come out.

(5) Come out and celebrate the 4th of July with the City of Cocoa, City of Rockledge and the Brevard Symphony Orchestra.  This annual event is one of the largest events to take place in Cocoa and the only place you can see the Brevard Symphony Orchestra play a free concert alongside a beautiful fireworks display over the Indian River.  This event is part of a larger three day celebration throughout the county called Smoke on the Water and Fire in the Sky.  For more info on the Cocoa July 4th Celebration, visit http://www.cocoafl.org/Calendar.aspx?EID=2362&month=6&year=2015&day=17&calType=0

(6) Stroll downtown Cocoa Village.  Voted one of Visit Florida's Top 8 "Shopping Gems in the Sunshine State", Cocoa Village is a unique shopping and dining destination.  With many unique stores such as a Magic Shop, Toy Store, Antique Shops, Clothing Stores and many award winning restaurants, the Village has something for everyone.  There are also a number of historic buildings including the Porcher House and Historic Cocoa Village Playhouse.

(7) Watch a movie in the park.  The City of Cocoa Leisure Services division offers a free monthly movie in Riverfront Park during the summer months. Schedule will be updated

(8)  Visit the Library of Florida History run by the Florida Historical Society.  The library houses a large collection of Florida historical documents and maps. Check out the list of events and programs at http://myfloridahistory.org/library.

(9) The Historic Cocoa Village Playhouse, once known as the Aladdin Theater, was built in 1924.  The playhouse features Broadway theater right here in Cocoa and offers a fantastic children's program over the summer.  For more information, visit http://www.cocoavillageplayhouse.com/

(10) Take a run or bike along the Indian River.  There are a number of running and biking events held each year in Cocoa to take advantage of the beautiful view of the Indian River such as one of the largest marathons in this region, the Space Coast Marathon.  The City of Cocoa is becoming the recreation hub of Brevard County and has specialty stores such as a running store and bike store right in Cocoa Village.

(11) Okay we added a bonus "fun thing" to do in Cocoa this summer that we missed in our original blog post.  Don't know how we missed this one.  Take a ride on the beautiful Indian River Queen.  The Queen is a stunning triple deck paddle wheel boat that docks right in Cocoa Village.  Visit, http://www.indianriverqueen.com/ for more information on this great Cocoa attraction.
