CPD EARNS 4TH RE-ACCREDITATION
(Cocoa, FL)—An independent assessment team granted another seal of approval for the Cocoa Police Department’s policies, procedures and practices and awarded the agency its fourth reaccreditation. The certificate of reaccreditation was presented to Chief Mike Cantaloupe and Accreditation Coordinator Wendy Stiteler in a ceremony near Orlando on Wednesday. The Commission for Florida Law Enforcement Accreditation (CFA) granted the certification following a near perfect three day assessment that took place in April. During that time the assessment team thoroughly reviewed all the department’s policies and procedures, interviewed personnel and evaluated the overall workings of the agency to determine if it continued to meet the high professional standards and best practices established by the commission for law enforcement agencies in Florida. “This whole process not only shows our willingness to be independently evaluated and held accountable, it demonstrates our commitment to delivering the most credible and professional public safety service to our citizens,” said Chief Mike Cantaloupe. “Receiving reaccreditation means our agency and its personnel are recognized as among the best in their field and I am proud of our team. We work diligently every day to make sure we continue to uphold these high standards.”
An accreditation program has long been recognized as a means of maintaining the highest standards of professionalism. Schools, universities, and hospitals are some of the most well-known organizations required to maintain accredited status. The accreditation process is an outstanding management tool for criminal justice agencies. Accreditation provides a blueprint for building an agency committed to providing value based services through accountability and transparency to the communities it serves. Cocoa is one of approximately 200 agencies in the state to maintain its accreditation status. The department is in compliance with more than 250 professional standards set by the commission to govern all aspects of professional law enforcement including everything from handling property and evidence to internal affairs, training and recruitment, use of force, special operations and other critical areas.
